The Florida Lottery was founded in January of 1988 and has since had some changes in its rule book. But from the beginning the Florida Lotto has funded educational programs with 35% of its revenues, as well as making many Lotto players very happy.
The tenth Florida Lotto winner was already a record breaker. Sheelah Ryan from Winter Springs was the largest single lottery winner to date. Her jackpot was worth $55.16 million and she planned to make a difference with her win. A divorced former real estate agent who lived in a mobile home before her win, Ryan established the Sheelah Ryan Foundation, a charity organization aimed at supporting people in need and providing scholarships for students around Winter Springs. Even after losing her fight to Cancer, her charity organization is still making a difference many years later.
Two years after the Florida Lotto started, the first $100 million jackpot was given out, in September of 1990 the $106.5 million jackpot was taken by six Lotto players. Each one took home $17.75 million. On that draw the Florida Lotto made a record $30 million revenue as well.
