The New York Lottery is one of the first government-administered lottery games to be held in the United States. Lottery games were very popular with the first settlers on American soil but were completely banned by the American government by 1900. The money raised from the first lotteries in New York helped fund the building of New York City Hall, as well as repair canals, roads, bridges, churches and much more.
Many years later, only in 1964, did legal official lottery games resurface in New Hampshire, and the New York Lottery was the second modern lottery in the United States, established in 1967. The revenue made by the New York Lottery is mainly aimed at providing additional funds for the state, funds that are aimed exclusively to support education. Since its inception in 1967 the New York Lottery has raised over $34 billion in aid of education.
New York Lottery draws are held twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 11:21 PM. Players must pick six numbers from the board of numbers from 1 to 59. The jackpot is handed to a player who matched all six numbers. If more than one player matches all six numbers, the jackpot is divided between the winners. A bonus number is also drawn. A second level prize is granted to players who match five of the main six numbers as well as the bonus. There are also prizes for players who matched three, four or five numbers out of the six. Recently the New York Lottery has had a small change made to it, a change that has added more prize levels to the mix and has bettered the odds of winning a prize. Lotto Extra is the name of the new add-on. In exchange for an additional $1, players can play Lotto Extra, matching an additional bonus number on top of the original bonus number. The extra payment allows for a total of eight prize levels, three more than those available with a classic Lotto slip.
The New York Lottery jackpot usually starts at $3 million. If no player matches all six numbers, the jackpot is rolled over and the jackpot at the next draw grows. If there is no winner of the second level prize, it is also rolled over and added to the next draw. Jackpot winners must choose whether they would like to receive their prize in a lump sum, usually equal to about half the advertised jackpot, or in 26 annual payments.
New York Lottery history was made in 2008. An immigrant from Paraguay named Mr. Martinez won the largest jackpot ever to be paid out to a single ticket holder - $65 million. In a December drawing in 2008, ten colleagues from Chemung and Steuben counties in New York named the Found Treasures Gang won $7 million when their six Quick Pick Lotto numbers were drawn in the New York Lottery drawing.

New York Lottery prize winners must claim their prizes within 12 months from the day of the draw. Prizes that go unclaimed for a longer period of time are reabsorbed by the lottery organization to create further games and draws. It is a fact that in the period between April 1 and May 31 of 2007 around $4.84 million in prize money expired. These numbers are relevant only for prizes worth more than $10,000, not taking into account the lower level prizes.
